Musicianship

My primary instrument is the trumpet, which I have been studying since the fifth grade (age 10). My father had been my private instructor during my school years, and my college professor was Dr. Langston J. Fitzgerald, III. In graduate school, my teachers have included Professors Matthew Gallagher, John Swana, and Joe Anderson. My conducting teachers include Professor Dennis Glocke, Dr. Eric Bush, and Dr. Corey Pompey. I have also studied jazz with Mr. Larry Koch, John Swana, and Marko Marcinko.

Myself and my father, Craig N. Shoener. Dad was my first trumpet teacher, as well as serving as my high school band director for the last three years of high school at Pottsville Area High School. He is my biggest mentor and confidant!
Myself and Dr. Langston J. Fitzgerald, III, my trumpet professor at Penn State. “Fitz” is a former member of the U.S. Navy Band and The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and was instrumental in my professional growth!

Myself and Professor Dennis Glocke, Director of Concert Bands at Penn State. Professor Glocke is a world-renowned wind band conductor, and I was extremely fortunate to perform in both ensembles he leads at Penn State (Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band). He also served as my conducting teacher for two years.
Myself pictured with Dr. Eric Bush (left of me), and Dr. Corey Pompey (right of me). Both of these men served as my conducting teachers for one year, and I was privileged to work with them on a daily basis when they served as faculty advisors to the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity. Both men have gone on to other positions at the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin – Madison, respectively.
Myself and Mr. Larry Koch, Owner/Director of the Braun School of Music in Pottsville, PA. LK served as my private jazz improvisation instructor throughout my formative years, and I am forever grateful for his knowledge, patience, and friendship.

Myself (pictured in first row, far left) and my bandmates in Centre Dimensions Jazz Ensemble. The Director of Jazz Studies, Professor Marko Marcinko (pictured center), was my jazz improvisation teacher during my college days at Penn State. Marko has had a major impact on my development as a jazz musician!

Musical Memories:

This video is from a concert performance of the Cressona Band, a community concert band with whom I perform. It is a solo feature on Tutti Camarata’s “A Trumpeter’s Prayer”

This is the video of my Graduate Jazz Trumpet Recital, given in partial fulfillment towards the Master of Music in Jazz Studies Degree at University of the Arts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my live recital performance was canceled, and in lieu of that, I coordinated a multi-track video recording project. I composed and arranged the music (all original compositions, except for one tune), and led a collaborative effort with other students at UARTS. Everyone recorded their tracks remotely, and then I was tasked with mixing and mastering the project, as well as creating the accompanying video. The program is listed at the beginning of the video. This project not only showcases my talents as a musician, composer, and arranger, but also my audio and video editing skills. It was very labor intensive, and I feel the quality of the work speaks for itself. Please enjoy!

Jacob Shoener’s M.M. in Jazz Studies Trumpet Recital

This video is the UARTS Graduate Jazz Ensemble’s Virtual Spring Concert from the Spring 2020 semester. The jazz combo is made up of all of the graduate students in the Master of Music in Jazz Studies program at UARTS, and plays original music written and arranged by its members. For this program, I composed an original composition entitled “The Call”, which is a contrafact based off of Horace Silver’s tune, “The Preacher”, as well as a free jazz piece entitled “Peace” (Pax). Please enjoy!

This is the video of my Senior Jazz Trumpet Recital, given in partial fulfillment towards the Bachelor of Music Education Degree. The program is listed below. It was a wonderful recital that really showcases my talents as a solo trumpet performer!

This video is from the 18th Annual Penn State Jazz Festival (2017). I was extremely blessed to perform with some giants of the jazz world, including trumpet Jon Faddis and saxophonist Tim Warfield. This concert was amazing and is one that will stay with me for a long time!

Video from the 19th Annual Penn State Jazz Festival (2018). I was lucky enough to back up the extremely talented New York Voices, groundbreaking jazz pianist Xavier Davis, and Grammy-award winning producer/trombonist/percussionist Jay Ashby! What a thrill it was to share the stage with these amazing musicians!
